Kolby's Story

He often competed in surf contests and won his share of trophies. But for Kolby, the trophy was never the most important part. The real reward was the challenge, the preparation, the competition, the opportunity to test himself, and the satisfaction of knowing he had given his best.

He did not waste his time trying to follow the crowd or measure his worth by social media, popularity, or the expectations of others. He understood that life was about so much more than appearances. It was about discovering who you were, becoming the best version of yourself, and helping others along the way.

A heart that saw everyone

One of the most remarkable things about Kolby was the way he cared for people. He watched out for everyone, not just his closest friends, but their parents, their brothers and sisters, and the people who were often overlooked.

He had a deep concern for people experiencing homelessness in his community and would sometimes give them his work tips to help them get through the day. His generosity did not stop there. Kolby would give away his own belongings to a friend or even a complete stranger if he believed that person needed them more than he did.

He did not give to receive recognition. He gave because it was simply who he was.

Kolby had a quiet way of looking after people. He noticed when someone was struggling. He recognized when a friend needed encouragement or when someone needed a little extra care. He would make time to listen, offer a helping hand, or simply be present.

He was the kind of person who could make a difference in someone's life without that person ever knowing how much thought or intention had gone into the gesture. In many ways, Kolby was the angel no one knew was around, quietly watching over others, quietly helping, and quietly making the world a little better.

Sometimes his kindness took the form of an invitation to go fishing, a chance to paddle out together, or simply being present when someone needed a friend. He understood that a small act of compassion could make a lasting difference in another person's life. Kolby was everyone's best friend.

A young man of character

Kolby held the utmost respect for adults and treated people with genuine consideration. He was humble, even when he had accomplished something remarkable.

From a young age, he enjoyed mastering things on his own. Whether it was card tricks or solving the algorithms of a Rubik's Cube, he would quietly work at something until he understood it. Then, in true Kolby fashion, he would share what he had learned with others.

That same quiet determination became part of his personal growth. During the last year of his life, Kolby began a deeper journey of self-discovery and faith. He did not announce it or seek attention for it. He was simply working to become a better young man.

He spent time with close friends talking about life, faith, responsibility, and the kind of men they wanted to become. They challenged one another, encouraged one another, and held each other accountable. Kolby understood that becoming better was not about being better than someone else. It was about growing together and helping one another rise.

Family was at the center of his heart

Kolby cared deeply for his family. His love for his parents and his sister, Sky-Sky, was an important part of who he was. Family was not just something he belonged to; it was something he cherished.

He also extended that sense of family to the people around him. His friends' families mattered to him. He watched out for their parents and siblings, treating them with the same thoughtfulness and respect he showed his own loved ones.

He carried the values of love, respect, humility, and compassion into the way he lived. Those closest to him saw a young man who was learning, growing, and discovering the person he wanted to become. Although his life was far shorter than anyone imagined, the love he gave and the example he set continue to live on in the people who knew him.

The legacy of Kolby

Kolby's life reminds us that we do not need a title, a famous family name, a platform, or thousands of followers to make a difference. Our influence can begin with the person standing next to us—a friend, a teammate, a brother or sister, a neighbor, or a stranger who simply needs someone to notice them.

Kolby had opportunities to stand out because of where he came from, but he chose to stand out because of who he was. He worked for his accomplishments, valued the challenge more than the recognition, and gave his kindness freely.

His father and best friend experienced firsthand the way Kolby encouraged others to grow. They learned from him, and they continue to carry those lessons forward.
